Terri Janke

Terri Janke BA LLB

Terri Janke is the Solicitor Director of Terri Janke & Company Pty Ltd.

As an Indigenous lawyer with a real understanding of how the legal system affects Indigenous people, Terri brings a unique perspective to the sound, effective resolution of legal issues and negotiations involving Indigenous culture and heritage.

Terri is a prolific author and energetic public speaker on issues relating to Indigenous cultural and intellectual property (ICIP). She has spoken to enthusiastic audiences in London, Geneva, Phuket, Auckland, Vancouver, Noumea and throughout Australia, including many remote Indigenous communities.

Terri’s pre-eminence as a lawyer and adviser in the specialist area of ICIP has been recognised through awards including

  • John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship by the Law Council of Australia in 1994
  • British Council Bursary to The University of Warwick in 1996
  • Evolving Business Winner 2001, NSW Aboriginal Employment and Business Awards
  • NSW Women of the Year Honour Roll 2005
  • Highly Commended, Aboriginal Justice Award, Law and Justice Foundation of NSW, in 2007

Terri is a graduate of the University of New South Wales, completing a Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1995. Terri has been admitted as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia.

Terri has worked in private legal firms including Phillips Fox, Sydney, and Michael Frankel & Co, Sydney. In 1999 she gained her Unrestricted Private Practise Certificate from the Law Society of New South Wales and in early 2000 she established her own legal firm, Terri Janke and Company. Terri is an active member of Ngalaya Indigenous lawyers in New South Wales.

Terri was born in north Queensland and has family connections to Cairns, the Torres Strait Islands (Meriam) and Cape York Peninsula (Wuthathi). Terri’s non-legal interests include spending time with her family, playing the guitar, singing and writing fiction. Her novel Butterfly Song was published by Penguin Books in 2005.

Terri’s appointments:

  • The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (appointed in 2007)
  • National Indigenous Television (NITV) (appointed in 2007)
  • Premiers Women’s Council (appointed in June 2008)
  • Tourism Australia (appointed in July 2008)

Terri is also completing a PhD in law at the Australian National University (National Centre for Indigenous Studies).

Andrew Pitt

Andrew Pitt BLArch

Andrew Pitt is the Finance Manager at Terri Janke and Company Pty Ltd. He is a graduate of the University of New South Wales holding a Bachelor Degree in Landscape Architecture. Andrew is also skilled in design, ecology, marketing and business management. He is excited and inspired by the energetic and passionate atmosphere found at the offices of Terri Janke and he feels the firm holds a unique position in Australian history. In 2003, Andrew was accepted as a member to the Australian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA).

Andrew was born and raised in country NSW before moving to the big smoke at age ten. At Sydney Boys High School Andrew was awarded Dux of Biology and made President of the Biology Club. He has served as President of the University of NSW Surfriders Club and is the chairman of a Rosebery community centre. He loves his family, surfing in the tropics and collecting antique postcards.

Anastasia Fay Charles

Anastasia Fay Charles

Anastasia Fay Charles is Professional Assistant to Terri Janke. Anastasia was born in Cairns, Far North Queensland. She is from the Ku-Ku Yalanji mob. She grew up in Cairns and moved to Sydney at the age of 15 where she completed her HSC at the St. Scholastica's College. She is currently studying at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), College Of Fine Arts. Anastasia's interests include travelling, dancing and making films.

Jeremy Morse

Jeremy Morse is a Graduate Lawyer at Terri Janke and Company Pty Ltd. He graduated from Southern Cross University with a Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Bachelor of Indigenous Studies Degree in 2007. He recently completed the College of Law Professional Program and expects to be admitted as a Legal Practitioner to the Supreme Court of New South Wales later this year. Born in Sydney but living abroad with his family from an early age, Jeremy has spent time living in Hong Kong, Cape York and the Himalayas. He has recently become a father, and loves reggae music, surfing and photography.
